Ausone's 2022 is a brooding, powerhouse vintage from one of Right Bank's two original Premier Grand Cru Classé A estates. An even split of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, hand-harvested from the estate's steep, southeast-facing limestone amphitheater above St. Émilion, the wine spent 20 months in new French oak. Deeply purple and full-bodied, it offers layers of black cherry, blueberry, violet, and spring flowers over a chalky, mineral-driven core, with fine, energetic tannins that promise three decades or more of evolution. This is a backward, structured Ausone built for the cellar rather than early drinking.

Country France
Region Bordeaux
Appellation St. Émilion Grand Cru
Producer Château Ausone
Varietal 50% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot
Vintage 2022
98 Points
"The 2022 Ausone, which was the earliest-picked ever on September 5(although that is later than Cheval Blanc) has another very intense bouquet with layers of plush blackberry, blueberry, crushed violet and
incense aromas that are beautifully entwined with the 100% new oak.Hints of blood orange emerge with a few minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and perfectly pitched acidity. The slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Franc imparts a touch more pepperiness toward the finish. You can feel this on your tongue long after it has departed. There is a surfeit of freshness on the
finish. This is an outstanding Ausone that can look forward to a very long future.
