2022 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac

Chateau Lafite Rothschild is one of just five estates awarded First Growth status in the 1855 classification, with a history on this Pauillac gravel rise stretching back to the thirteenth century. The Rothschild family acquired the property in 1868 and has guided it ever since, building a reputation for restraint and precision. Baron Eric de Rothschild took over management in 1974, steering decades of refinement that continue today.

The 112-hectare vineyard is split across three parcels, the slopes around the chateau, the Carruades plateau, and a small plot in neighboring Saint-Estèphe, all planted on fine, deep gravel over limestone. The 2022 blend leans heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon, with small additions of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Grapes were harvested between late August and late September, with modest yields that concentrated flavor in a warm, dry season. The wine was aged around eighteen months in barrel.

The 2022 offers a classic Lafite profile, opening with blackcurrant, graphite and violet, with cedar and pencil shavings emerging over time. The palate is deep and concentrated yet light on its feet, framed by silky tannins and a long finish. Pair it with roast lamb or prime rib.

100 Points
"In bottle, the 2022 Lafite Rothschild has turned out even better than I anticipated. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, minty blackcurrants, violets and cigar box, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and suave, with a deep, envelopi..."
