2022 Cobb Wines - Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast (750ml)
Ross Cobb grew up watching his parents, David and Diane, transform a remote ridgeline west of Occidental, purchased in 1988 and planted the following year as Coastlands Vineyard, into one of the far Sonoma Coast's most respected sites. Before launching Cobb Wines with his family in 2001, Ross spent time as viticulturist and enologist at Williams Selyem, experience that sharpened his instincts for coaxing precision and restraint out of cool climate fruit. Today the family estate spans forty acres, farmed with organic and regenerative practices, and remains a hands-on, mailing-list driven operation rather than a large commercial label.
This appellation-level Sonoma Coast bottling draws on four vineyards, Abigail's, Emmaline Ann, Rice-Spivak, and Mes Filles, blending a clonal mix of Calera, Swan, Martini, and Pommard selections. Ross fermented the wine with 50 percent whole clusters and native yeast, then bottled it unfiltered, a hands-off approach meant to preserve the cool, maritime character that defines this stretch of coastline. Only 595 cases were made.
The wine opens with expressive blackberry fruit accented by conifer, forest floor, and a touch of crème brûlée. The medium bodied palate offers plush berry fruit framed by powdery tannins, saline minerality, and refreshing acidity through a long finish. It pairs nicely with cedar-planked trout, roasted wild mushrooms, or a young Toma cheese.
