2022 Henri Magnien - Ruchottes Chambertin (750ml)
Domaine Henri Magnien was founded in 1987 in Gevrey-Chambertin, though the family's winemaking roots run back generations. Charles Magnien took over from his father, François, in the early 2010s and has quickly become one of the village's most respected young winemakers. The domaine farms just six hectares, mostly prized Gevrey parcels like Lavaut Saint-Jacques, Cazetiers, and Champeaux, and has converted roughly seventy to eighty percent of its vines to organic viticulture.
Ruchottes-Chambertin is one of the smallest grand crus in Gevrey-Chambertin, just over three hectares shared among only eight producers. Magnien holds two small parcels of vines over fifty years old, totaling a mere sixteen hundredths of a hectare. The wine is aged entirely in new, lightly flamed and long-toasted French oak, the same regime the domaine uses for its top premier cru, giving it real structure alongside its natural elegance.
The 2022 is fleshy and polished, with red berries, peonies, sweet spice, and orange zest lifting from the glass. The palate is full-bodied and satiny, with a velvety attack that opens onto a bright core of fruit and a long, saline finish. Give it time in the cellar, then serve with roast venison, braised short ribs, or aged Comté.
