One of the benchmark producers of the Finger Lakes — founded in 1976 by a Mosel-born vine-grafting savant and now run by longtime apprentice Fred Merwarth — Wiemer is best known for world-class Riesling but has quietly become a standard-bearer for cool-climate Cabernet Franc. The 2022 benefited from a dry vintage, giving it ripe fruit concentration and real structure: violet, black raspberry, ripe cherry, tobacco, new leather, and a whisper of cedar over a medium-bodied, silky palate driven by juicy acidity and fine, chalky tannins. Fermented with 30% whole clusters and raised almost entirely in stainless steel, it shows remarkable textural roundness for a wine with no new oak. A stellar, food-friendly expression of Finger Lakes Cab Franc — reach for cured meats or barbecue.
