2022 Lauverjat - Sancerre Rouge Moulin Vrilleres
Sancerre Rouge is one of France's best-kept secrets, and this single-parcel bottling from the Lauverjat family is a fine example of what Pinot Noir can express in this cool continental climate. The Lauverjat family has been growing grapes for generations in the village of Sury-en-Vaux. The estate is very much a family affair, with husband-and-wife team Christian and Karine joined by their son Kevin in the winery. The family farms sustainably without herbicides or pesticides across 12 hectares of vines, and also cultivates wheat, hops, and rapeseed alongside their vineyards.
The Vrillères takes its name from the stream running by the family's house. The parcel has more clay in its soils than is typical for the appellation, which contributes a rounder, more approachable fruit character. After harvest, the wine is aged for ten months in older barrels before bottling.
The result is a beautifully soft Sancerre Rouge with great purity of fruit and balance. The concentrated palate is ample and harmonious, with supple tannins and a persistent, fresh finish. Think of it as a Loire Valley alternative to red Burgundy, with extraordinary delicacy and finesse from a climate even cooler than the Côte d'Or.
Pairs beautifully with:
- Grilled salmon and other fatty fish
- Roasted poultry and veal
- Soft-rind cheeses and mushroom dishes
