2022 Llano Colorado - Surco Rojo Valle de Guadalupe (750ml)
Llano Colorado is a family vineyard operation south of Ensenada in the Valle de San Vicente, along Baja California's historic wine route. Now in its third generation, the family has built a reputation as one of the region's top grape growers and supplies fruit to many wineries throughout Valle de Guadalupe from its nearly 1,000-acre property. Their own wines, including Surco Rojo, are made in partnership with VinĂcola Regional de Ensenada under the guidance of respected Baja California winemakers.
Surco Rojo is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo grown across three vineyards in the Valle de San Vicente, an area known for clay-rich, alluvial, and volcanic soils along with a steady, ample water supply that is unusual for the region. Moderate yields per hectare help concentrate flavor in the grapes. After fermentation, the wine ages twelve months in American oak barrels, followed by another twelve months resting in bottle before release, a process that rounds out its structure and integrates its oak influence.
The finished wine shows a deep, burgundy-red color and a complex bouquet of cherry, plum, cassis, and dried fruit, layered with almond, chestnut, and tobacco notes. On the palate it is silky and balanced, dry with soft tannins and a long, fruit-driven finish. It pairs nicely with roast beef, arrachera tacos, or a charcuterie-topped pizza.
