2022 Louis Boillot - Volnay Angles (750ml) [PRE ARRIVAL]
Louis Boillot's family history in Volnay runs deep. His father, Lucien, was born in the village, where his own father ran Domaine Henri Boillot, before relocating to Gevrey-Chambertin in the 1950s to found Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils. Louis took his share of that inheritance and struck out on his own in 2003, choosing to vinify his wines in Chambolle-Musigny alongside his wife, Ghislaine Barthod, in a shared cellar with entirely separate operations. Their son, Clément, now oversees winemaking for both domaines, carrying on a hands-off style built around old vines and patient, terroir-driven craftsmanship.
Les Angles is a 0.54-hectare parcel just east of the village of Volnay, planted mostly with 45-year-old vines alongside a small portion dating back 85 years. As a warm site, it's typically among the first parcels picked each harvest. The grapes are hand harvested and destemmed, then given a cold soak before roughly three weeks of maceration with regular punch-downs and pump-overs. The wine matures for about twelve months in barrels, up to thirty percent new, before bottling without fining or filtration.
This is a rounded, well-structured Volnay, carrying the appellation's signature red fruit and floral perfume alongside ripe, supple tannins and good overall balance. It drinks well with some youth on it, making it a versatile match for roast chicken, duck, lamb, or earthy mushroom dishes.
