Volnay has been home to the Marquis d'Angerville family for generations, and the estate remains one of Burgundy's benchmarks for old-school, terroir-driven winemaking. Farmed organically and biodynamically under Guillaume d'Angerville, the domaine draws on parcels scattered across the village's finest slopes, applying the same gentle, minimal-intervention approach to every cuvée, from its celebrated monopole down to its premier cru bottlings across the appellation.

Fremiets lies on the north side of the village near the Pommard border, on the domaine's steepest slope, where shallow, clay-dominated soils sit over limestone and marl. The roughly 1.6-hectare parcel is hand-harvested and vinified with the estate's typical restraint, aged in barrel with only a light touch of oak to preserve the site's naturally structured character.

The wine shows kirsch, black raspberry, and anise, with warm spice and a touch of floral lift over a mineral core. Medium to full-bodied, it is denser and more structured than many Volnays, with fine, powdery tannins and real grip beneath its elegance. It pairs well with roast goose, grilled venison, or a firm alpine cheese.

93 Points
"The 2022 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has more depth and fruit

concentration compared to the Clos des Angles. The nose displays a

mélange of red and black fruit, pressed flowers and a touch of loam

aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, just a

slight lactic note on the entry, segueing into a more marine-tinged

latter half. A pinch of black pepper appears toward the finish. Give this

two or three years in bottle.
