2022 Massaya - Le Colombier Red Bekaa Valley (750ml)
Massaya was founded in 1998 by brothers Sami and Ramzi Ghosn on a once-derelict Beqaa Valley estate that their father, Michel, acquired in the 1970s. The Tanail winery there anchors the range, and a 2014 expansion added a winery and restaurant complex in Mount Lebanon. The family also makes arak, the anise spirit that was their first step into alcohol.
Le Colombier is the estate's approachable, entry-tier red, built on 35 percent each of Grenache Noir and Cinsault, with Tempranillo making up the remaining 30 percent. The grapes grow at high altitude on the foothills of Mount Lebanon in chalky clay soils, where warm days and cool nights preserve freshness. After hand harvesting and sorting on tables, the fruit is fully destemmed and fermented for 20 to 30 days in stainless steel, then aged for one year in vats. Farming follows biodynamic practices.
Light on its feet and brightly fruited, this red shows wild strawberry, cranberry, and red cherry, along with sweet spice, dried herbs, and a touch of eucalyptus. Breezy acidity keeps the palate crisp and lively, while soft tannins lead to a savory finish. Meant to be enjoyed young, it shows the fruit-first side of Lebanese wine.
