Massican was founded in 2009 by Dan Petroski, who set out to make what he called Napa's only dedicated white wine label at a time when the valley was almost entirely defined by Cabernet. Petroski, who also oversees the Cabernet program at historic Larkmead Vineyards, draws on his own Italian heritage and a fascination with the coastal whites of Friuli to shape a style he describes as Mediterranean: high acid, floral, and often touched with salinity. The approach earned him Winemaker of the Year honors from the San Francisco Chronicle in 2017.

Annia, the winery's flagship bottling, blends three grapes harvested and fermented separately before coming together roughly six weeks ahead of bottling. The 2022 vintage combines Ribolla Gialla and Tocai Friulano from small Napa vineyards with Chardonnay sourced from the well-regarded Hyde Vineyard in Carneros. The Friulian varieties shape the wine's aromatics, while the Chardonnay lends body and structure, all fermented across a mix of French oak and stainless steel.

The wine opens with lemon curd, honeysuckle, chamomile, and dried apricot, followed by a palate of citrus, yellow apple, and peach, with a mineral, wet stone quality and a whisper of sea salt. The texture stays soft even as the acidity keeps things lively. It pairs well with grilled branzino, spring pea risotto, or fresh burrata.

91 Points
"juicy and plump, with peach, mango and tangerine flavors that reveal pretty floral accents of orange blossoms, lemon verbena and ylang-ylang, while notes of white pepper and sea salt minerality linger on the long, fresh finish. Ribolla Gialla, Tocai Friulano and Chardonnay. Drink now. 2,736 cases made."
