Domaine Michel Lafarge has farmed in Volnay since the nineteenth century and was among the very first Burgundy estates to bottle its own wine, doing so as early as the 1900s. Today Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge continue the family's old-school, minimalist approach, farming biodynamically and relying on native yeasts and gentle handling to preserve the purity of each site, from village-level bottlings to the domaine's celebrated premier crus.

This village Volnay is blended from six parcels spread across the appellation, including Brouillard, Buttes, Famines, Pasquiers, and Cros Martin, with vines averaging forty to fifty years old on classic clay-limestone soils. The grapes are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts, then aged mostly in neutral, older barrels to keep the wine's fruit and structure in clear focus.

The wine shows red cherry, raspberry, and rose petal, with hints of violet and gentle spice. Medium-bodied and unusually robust for a village Volnay, it has fine, silky tannins, lively acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. It pairs well with seared duck breast, herb-crusted lamb, or a nutty aged cheese.

89-91 Points
"Spicier aromas of poached plum, dark currant, violet and a hint of crushed fennel are rimmed in more subtle wood influence. Once again there is a really lovely texture to the more mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel, all wrapped in a firm, punchy, lightly austere and equally well-balanced finale. Lovely and understated."
