2022 Montevertine - Toscana Rosso IGT Montevertine Super Tuscan (750ml)

Montevertine is a small estate in Radda in Chianti, founded in the late 1960s by Sergio Manetti, a passionate believer in Sangiovese's ability to stand on its own. When the Chianti Classico regulations of the time still called for a share of white grapes in the blend, Manetti refused to compromise and left the Consortium in 1982, releasing his wines instead as Toscana IGT. That decision helped establish Montevertine as one of the defining estates of Tuscany's modern wine renaissance, a legacy now carried on by his son, Martino.

The estate's namesake wine, simply called Montevertine, is a traditional blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats over about three weeks, followed by malolactic fermentation in the same vessels, before the wine ages for two years in a mix of Slavonian and Allier oak barrels. The 2022 vintage came from an unusually warm growing season that briefly stalled ripening, pushing harvest into early October and yielding fruit with a touch more density than usual.

The wine offers dark red cherry, plum, and blood orange, layered with pomegranate, menthol, and rose petal. Silky tannins and bright acidity carry the fruit through a long, savory finish with a touch of licorice. It suits Tuscan pasta with meat ragù, roasted chicken, or a plate of prosciutto.
