The 2022 Petrolo Galatrona is a single-vineyard Merlot produced at Fattoria Petrolo in the Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC, situated between Florence, Siena, and Arezzo. The vines were established in the early 1990s on a forested mountainside at elevations between 250 and 450 meters, where two geological plates converge to expose a subsoil blending heavy clay, sand, crushed rock, and limestone. Petrolo has farmed the property organically since 2016, relying exclusively on dry-farming methods and hands-on vineyard management.

This vintage captures the distinct footprint of Tuscan viticulture, translating Merlot into a profile that closely mirrors regional Sangiovese. Concentrated dark cherry and wild berry flavors layer over notes of pressed rose, all held within a medium-plus structure. Fine, well-integrated tannins carry precision through to a finish defined by lasting freshness rather than heaviness. Vintner Luca Sanjust processed the harvest using a reductive, low-oxygen approach designed to protect aromatic purity and support long-term bottle development.

"The Petrolo 2022 Val d'Arno di Sopra Galatrona is a beautiful wine with an elegantly focused and streamlined style. Proprietor Luca Sanjust describes this vintage as "the most Tuscan version of Galatrona" he has produced, and he remarks on the ability of Merlot, the grape used here, to resemble Sangiovese in the unique Valdarno territory. Winemaking has been tweaked to produce the wine in an initially more reductive style to ensure better and longer bottle evolution. The team is working with better woods, neutral oak and bigger capacities. There is more work with the lees and no racking. The wine shows a core of dark fruit with wild berries and pressed rose. This medium-plus Tuscan Merlot concludes with lasting freshness. The Galatrona site has mixed soils with sand, rocks and clay. Two geological plates meet at this spot, and the clay pan folds underground as a result. The site is surrounded by cooling forests."
