Domaine Robert Chevillon has farmed in Nuits-Saint-Georges for more than a century and is now led by fifth-generation brothers Bertrand and Denis, who tend roughly thirteen hectares, about eight of them premier cru. Many in the trade consider the estate's top parcels to perform at a level well above their official premier cru status, and Vaucrains, planted in the appellation's firmer southern reaches, is often singled out as the most serious and age-worthy wine in the range.

Vaucrains sits on steep, stony slopes known for producing structured, tannic wines, a departure from the silkier style found elsewhere in the Chevillon portfolio. As with the rest of the domaine's premier crus, the grapes are entirely destemmed, fermented with extended maceration at relatively warm temperatures, and aged roughly eighteen months in barrel, with around thirty percent new oak from the local Tonnellerie Sirugue.

The wine opens with dark berries, cherry, and plum, framed by rose petal, violet, and a trace of blood orange and brown spice. Full bodied and layered, it carries firm, powdery tannins that call for patience. Pair it with braised beef cheek, wild boar ragù, or aged Gruyère.

94-96 Points
" The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru, the last Premier

Cru to be served from barrel, has the nest nose: mineral-rich black

and red fruit with exquisite detail. The most precise of Chevillon's

Premier Crus. The medium-bodied palate oers ripe red fruit laced

with marmalade and blood orange. It’s a little spicier than the Les

Saint-Georges and grainier in texture, with a dash of brown spice on

the finish. Outstanding.
