From Napa Valley's Rutherford, the 2022 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon Napa captures a storied lineage that helped shape some of the valley's most celebrated wines. Crafted from fruit hand-selected from the historic 1945 plantings at the J.J. Cohn Estate and neighboring blocks along the lower slopes of the Mayacamas, this vintage is built almost entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon with a small addition of Malbec. After twenty-two months in barrels, a majority of them new French oak, the wine gains structure while preserving the fruit’s natural lift. Guided by winemaker Celia Welch and vineyard manager Michael Wolf, Scarecrow remains one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon producers, and the 2022 release is purposefully built to reward extended cellaring.

Tasting notes

  • Aromas: cassis, graphite, smoked tobacco, and dark chocolate, with red and black cherry fruit woven throughout.
  • Palate: full-bodied and velvety, with polished tannins and remarkable length that lingers into a long finish.

Wine details & terroir

  • Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon with a small addition of Malbec, sourced from Rutherford’s well-drained soils along the lower slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains.
  • Production: fruit hand-selected from the historic 1945 plantings and adjacent blocks.
  • Winemaking: aged for 22 months in barrels, a majority of them new French oak, yielding added structure while preserving lift from the fruit.
  • Producer guidance: crafted under the direction of Celia Welch and Michael Wolf, continuing Scarecrow’s reputation for depth, balance, and longevity.

Food pairing & serving suggestions

  • Best served with grilled ribeye, venison, or a rich beef stew to complement the wine’s depth, tannic structure, and layered fruit.
97 Points
"The 2022 Scarecrow is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the J.J. Cohn vineyard, nestled up against the lower slopes of the Mayacamas. Bottled in July 2024, it features mixed red and black cherries on the nose, plus hints of cassis and pencil shavings. In the mouth, it's full-bodied and silky, the wood bringing structure—and maybe even a bit of freshness—to the wine this year, prolonging the finish and helping to shape the palate into a more linear shape. Not quite up to the lofty standards of the 2019 or 2021 vintages, it's still a stunning Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that should evolve nicely for two decades."
