Founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Paolo Scavino has grown across four generations into one of Barolo's most respected houses, now overseen by Enrico Scavino together with his daughters, Enrica and Elisa. Over decades, Enrico sought out and purchased individual parcels within Barolo's most storied villages, eventually assembling roughly thirty hectares of Nebbiolo that let the estate bottle a full range of single-vineyard MGA wines alongside its house-style classic Barolo. Vinification across the range leans on native yeasts and minimal intervention, with each site's fruit handled separately before final blending and aging in a combination of French oak barrels, large casks, and stainless steel.

This classic Barolo draws on five sites within Castiglione Falletto and Barolo, including the Codana, Vignolo, and Meriondino vineyards alongside Via Nuova and Vignane, continuing a long house tradition of blending across different crus to build a wine more immediately harmonious than the individual MGA bottlings. The grapes ferment in stainless steel before the wine ages twelve months in French oak barriques, followed by a further twelve months in large oak casks.

The wine pours a bright ruby color, with pretty aromas of black raspberry, violet, fresh earth, and candied licorice. Medium to full-bodied, it shows ripe tannins, balanced acidity, and good length, with impressive purity throughout. Already appealing now, it should continue developing over the next decade. It pairs beautifully with Piedmontese cheeses and grilled red meat.

94 Points
"A graceful Barolo with licorice, leaves, black pepper, balsamic, clay and minerals on the nose. Austere on the palate, with thick tannins, a full body, crisp acidity and a tight finish. Best from 2030."
