2022 Schloss Gobelsburg - Gruner Veltliner Lamm (750ml)
Schloss Gobelsburg has been producing wine in the Kamptal since at least 1171, when Cistercian monks first cultivated the land, and the estate still draws on that long history under the direction of Michael and Eva Moosbrugger. While the winery is known broadly for its precise, terroir focused approach across many bottlings, its single vineyard wines like Ried Lamm represent the top of that hierarchy, sourced from one of the region's most distinguished sites.
Ried Lamm sits on the southeast slope of the Heiligenstein, where erosion has left a soil built from Permian red siltstone layered with loess and a notable share of clay. The south facing exposure gives the grapes generous sun exposure through the growing season. After harvest, this bottling ferments and matures in large traditional oak casks, some as big as five to six thousand liters and crafted from wood sourced in the nearby Manhartsberg forest, lending gentle structure without heavy oak flavor.
The wine opens with a honeyed, creamy nose touched by gentle anise spice, moving into a palate of juicy pear and rounded, zesty fruit. Dried papaya and a leesy, spicy complexity add further depth, finishing long with salty minerality and a lingering, chamomile like note. Pair it with roast guinea fowl, buttered root vegetables, or aged gouda.
