2022 Tenuta di Trinoro - Toscana Rosso IGT Campo di Camagi
Tenuta di Trinoro was founded in the early 1990s by Andrea Franchetti, an Italian wine trader turned vintner who purchased a remote stretch of the Val d'Orcia that had never before grown vines. Trained partly in Bordeaux, he planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot on clay and limestone soils reminiscent of Saint-Émilion, quickly building the estate into one of Tuscany's most distinctive names. Since Franchetti's passing in 2021, his son Benjamin has carried the project forward alongside winemaker Lorenzo Fornaini, maintaining the same exacting standards.
Campo di Camagi is a single-vineyard bottling, drawn from a tiny plot of just over a hectare planted on thin quartz and limestone soil at roughly 550 meters elevation. The 2022 growing season was notably dry, following an already arid 2021, which pushed yields down and concentrated the small berries produced. Made entirely from Cabernet Franc, the wine ferments in stainless steel for about two weeks before aging in French oak followed by a longer rest in cement tanks, a process meant to preserve freshness and precision.
The nose offers dried cherry, blood orange, and dried herbs alongside notes of espresso and baking spice, framed by bright acidity and fine, persistent tannins. It is a linear, structured wine built for extended aging, though its aromatic intensity makes it rewarding even in youth. Pour it alongside grilled lamb, aged pecorino, or a rich braised beef dish to match its concentration and grip.
