Trefethen Family Vineyards was founded in 1968 by Gene and Katie Trefethen, who purchased the historic Eshcol Ranch in Napa's Oak Knoll District, including an 1886 winery building now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The estate remains family run today, with the next generation, John, Janet, Lorenzo, and Hailey Trefethen, continuing the winery's legacy alongside winemaker Bryan Kays. Trefethen's Chardonnay was the wine that first put both the winery and Napa Valley on the international map, and it remains central to the estate's identity.

Grown entirely on Trefethen's estate vineyards in the Oak Knoll District, this Chardonnay benefits from one of Napa's coolest growing sites. Positioned at the southern end of the valley, the district receives strong cooling influence from San Pablo Bay and Pacific fog, keeping summer days notably cooler than areas farther north and allowing for a long, unhurried ripening season that builds balanced acidity and flavor development.

The wine opens with fresh green apple and stone fruit aromas layered with hints of gardenia. On the palate, zesty citrus and a touch of ginger lead into a light, bright finish. It pairs nicely with grilled shrimp, a tart apple and fennel salad, or fresh ricotta.

90 Points
"A vivid, crisp and refreshing chardonnay with fresh lemons, warm herbs and mild spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Crunchy and straightforward with a mouthwatering finish. Drink now."
