2022 Zind Humbrecht - Pinot Gris Turckheim (750ml)
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht traces its unbroken winemaking lineage in Alsace back to 1620, though the estate took its current name in 1959, when Léonard Humbrecht married Geneviève Zind and merged their family vineyard holdings. Their son Olivier took over winemaking in 1989, the same year he earned his Master of Wine title, and steered the domaine toward biodynamic farming in the early 1990s, achieving full certification in 2002. Today the estate farms roughly forty hectares spread across some of Alsace's finest Grand Cru and lieu-dit sites, with a non-interventionist philosophy in the cellar that lets each vineyard's character come through clearly.
This bottling draws on vineyards in the Herrenweg area of Turckheim, where gravelly, sandy loam left behind by glaciers and the Fecht river forms warm, well-drained soil. It is traditionally the first parcel harvested each year on the domaine, and the grapes undergo gentle pressing followed by a natural malolactic fermentation and extended aging in large foudres before bottling.
The wine pours a bright pale yellow and offers a precise, fresh nose of pear, apple, and honey. On the palate it feels elegant and light-framed yet carries real density, with lively acidity leading into a notably dry finish. It pairs nicely with smoked or richly sauced fish, roast chicken, and dishes with a touch of spice.
