2023 Baleia Winery - Western Cape Vinho Rochas Red Blend (750ml)

Baleia's vineyards and olive groves are located on exclusive terroir a stone's throw from St Sebastian Bay — known as the whale nursery of South Africa — in the remote Lower Duiwenhoksrivier valley near Vermaaklikheid on the Cape South Coast. Baleia is the only winery in this pristine valley, and their vineyards lie just 10 kilometres from the Indian Ocean, where salty coastal breezes sweep inland to temper the midday heat.

The uniqueness of Baleia lies in the soil — pure, solid limestone with a very high mineral content — creating a chalky minerality and maritime salinity that is entirely its own. 

The Vinho Rochas is a Syrah/Tempranillo blend that brings together the best of both worlds — structure, vibrancy, and delicate oak. Bold yet refined, familiar yet surprising.   Aromas of blackberry, ripe plum, and cacao nibs, with a weighty mouthfeel characterized by round, soft tannins.   The nose shows berries, pomegranate, dried flowers, herbs, and spice, while the palate delivers good fruit density, bright acidity, and fine tannins.
