South Africa's most decorated fortified wine producer — and the Hanepoot that started it all.

Boplaas is situated in Calitzdorp, a small picturesque village in the Klein Karoo, where the Nel family has been crafting exceptional fortified wines for over 150 years. A Cape Wine Master, Carel Nel runs the estate alongside his family, and Boplaas has long been regarded as one of the foremost producers of premium Port and dessert wines in South Africa.

The Hanepoot — made from Muscat d'Alexandrie — is one of the most award-laden wines in the country, having claimed the national trophy as South Africa's best Hanepoot at the SA Young Wine Show over a dozen times. The vines were planted by winemaker Margaux Nel's grandfather, Oupa Danie, some 30 years ago. Very low yielding, the grapes are hand harvested at optimal ripeness and rested in open-top fermenters prior to vinification.

A bright lemon-yellow wine with a lime-tinged rim, the bouquet leaps from the glass with intense ripe Hanepoot grape aromas, pineapple, lemon rind, litchi, and winter melon, intermingled with hints of jasmine, honeysuckle, and faint spice.  Versatile and food-friendly — serve as an aperitif, alongside spicy Asian cuisine, roast duck, or traditional desserts.

A truly special bottle from one of the Cape's most storied wine families.
