2022 Borgo del Tiglio - Milleuve Bianco Venezia Giulia Bianco (750ml)
Nicola Manferrari came to winemaking almost by accident. Trained as a pharmacist, he took over his family's small estate in Brazzano, near Cormons in Friuli's Collio hills, after his father's sudden death in 1981, bottling his own wine for the first time the following year. Entirely self-taught, he developed a meticulous, hands-off style built on gentle pneumatic pressing inspired by Champagne production and patient barrel aging, techniques that helped establish him as one of Friuli's original trailblazers alongside contemporaries like Mario Schiopetto and Josko Gravner. His son, Mattia, now works alongside him, continuing the estate's reputation for age-worthy, textural whites drawn from old, low-yielding vineyards around Brazzano and Ruttars.
Milleuve is Borgo del Tiglio's more accessible label, built from declassified barrels and fruit not selected for the estate's flagship bottlings. This bianco blends Friulano, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Riesling Renano, all handled with Manferrari's signature approach of gentle pneumatic pressing and gravity-fed transfers between separate lots, before an assemblage that draws on the estate's various plots for added complexity.
The wine is zesty and energetic, brimming with thirst-quenching acidity, bright citrus notes, and a distinct sense of minerality, all wrapped around a fresh core of stone fruit. It's a versatile, food-friendly white, well suited to shellfish, pasta, cured meats, or mature hard cheeses.
