2023 Charles Audoin - Marsannay Clos de Jeu (750ml) [PRE ARRIVAL]
Domaine Charles Audoin has deep roots in Marsannay, where four generations preceded Cyril Audoin before he formally took the reins in 2009. His grandfather once sold wine to Dijon négociants and cafés on the side, and the domaine still carries the name of Cyril's father, Charles, who grew the estate from just 2.5 hectares of mostly gamay and aligoté to today's fourteen hectares spread across Marsannay's three constituent villages of Chenôve, Marsannay, and Couchey. Under Cyril, the domaine achieved organic certification, and its single-vineyard bottlings have become a benchmark for a region still awaiting the premier cru recognition many believe it has earned.
Clos de Jeu sits on the slope behind the village of Marsannay itself, near the Couchey end of the appellation at roughly 300 meters above sea level. Its deeper soils set it apart from the sandier, lighter ground found farther north in Clos du Roy, giving this site's wines more structure and density while keeping them approachable young. The grapes are hand harvested and carefully selected, then vinified from certified organic fruit and bottled without fining or filtration.
Expect a deep ruby color and a broad, layered nose of wild strawberries and cherries, violet, undergrowth, Provençal herbs, sweet spice, and cedar. Powerful yet soft on the palate, it drinks well with beef, veal, or game such as rabbit or venison.
