2023 Charles Audoin - Marsannay Clos du Roy (750ml) [PRE ARRIVAL]
Domaine Charles Audoin was founded in 1972 by Charles and Marie-Françoise Audoin, starting from just three hectares in Marsannay-la-Côte and growing to fourteen today. Their son Cyril, the fifth generation of Audoins in the commune, joined the domaine in 2001, took over vinification in 2005, and assumed full control when his father retired in 2009, later guiding the estate to organic certification in 2021. Under his direction, Domaine Charles Audoin has become central to Marsannay's rise as one of the Côte de Nuits' most compelling appellations, known for wines of purity, precision, and energy.
Clos du Roy is Marsannay's northernmost vineyard, rising on a steep, east to southeast-facing slope above the town of Chenôve. Its light, sandy red topsoil sits over hard Comblanchien limestone bedrock, a combination that tends to produce some of the appellation's more powerful, structured wines. The site has a long history, having once belonged to King Louis XI after he seized it from the Dukes of Burgundy. Grapes are hand harvested from certified organic vines and bottled without fining or filtration.
This vintage shows vivid redcurrant, raspberry, and wild herbs, with the limestone terroir coming through as mineral-driven acidity and tension. A subtle tannic grip and a touch of bitter almond round out the finish. It pairs well with roast poultry, veal, or duck breast.
