2023 Chateau Cheval Blanc - St. Emilion MAGNUM (Bordeaux Future ETA 2026) (1.5L)
Chateau Cheval Blanc traces its origins to 1832, when land was separated from the neighboring Chateau Figeac to form a new estate near the Pomerol border. The name, meaning white horse, has become synonymous with one of Bordeaux's most singular terroirs. One of the original two Premier Grand Cru Classe A properties, the estate is guided today by manager Pierre Lurton and technical director Pierre-Olivier Clouet.
The vineyard sits on a rare mix of gravel, clay and sand rather than the limestone typical of Saint-Emilion, lending the wine much of the richness associated with neighboring Pomerol. Cabernet Franc makes up the largest share of plantings, a departure from the Merlot-driven blends common in the appellation. The 2023 vintage combines fifty-two percent Merlot, forty-six percent Cabernet Franc and two percent Cabernet Sauvignon, aged sixteen to eighteen months in new French oak.
Aromas of violets, lilac and dark berry fruit lead into a supple, medium to full-bodied palate carrying notes of iris root, mulberry and gentle spice. Fine tannins support a long, perfumed finish with real aging potential. Pour it alongside herb-crusted lamb, duck breast or a well-marbled ribeye, or pair with truffle dishes and aged cheese.
