2023 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave – Hermitage Rouge (750ml)

There are perhaps a handful of wines in the world that can genuinely claim to be irreplaceable — wines so rooted in history, terroir, and human devotion that they exist in a category entirely their own. Chave Hermitage Rouge is one of them. The Chave family has been making wine since 1481 — sixteen generations of unbroken Hermitage mastery — and in the hands of Jean-Louis Chave, this already legendary estate has reached heights that leave even the most seasoned critics searching for new superlatives.

Jean-Louis oversees 14.5 hectares of Syrah planted across some of the most coveted plots on the hill of Hermitage — including the granitic Bessards, the spice-driven Beaume, the mineral L'Ermite, and the finesse-oriented Péléat — vinified separately before an act of blending that is as much art as science. His methods are uncompromisingly traditional: low yields, full ripeness, minimal oak, no filtering. The 2023 is described by early critics as a slight throwback to ripe yet very classic, mineral-driven examples of Chave's Hermitage — pure, elegant, and refined, with the L'Ermite bringing rose petal and minerality, the Bessards contributing its characteristic granitic, graphite-structured core, and the overall wine offering both early enjoyment given its ripe style and ample longevity from its underlying structure and minerality. Deep, luminous ruby in the glass, the nose is hauntingly layered — violet, black olive, smoked meat, graphite, iron, and dark fruit that deepens and evolves endlessly with air. On the palate it is powerful yet aristocratically poised, with extraordinary concentration, silky precision, and a finish of breathtaking length and mineral grandeur that seems to last forever.

These are Hermitages that taste like they have existed forever — and wines that will outlive us all. Allocations are extremely limited. Cellar deeply and drink with reverence.

96-98 Points
"As always, I was able to taste the 2023 Hermitage from multiple parcels, and it's clear this will be another beautiful Hermitage. The Péléat, which comes from sandier soils, is always more finesse-oriented. The Beaume lieu-dit brings more complexity and spice, the L'Ermite more minerality and rose petal nuances, and the Bessards always brings the granitic, graphite, structured core that defines this cuvée. I love the overall purity, elegance, and finesse of the 2023, which is a slight throwback to ripe, yet very classic, mineral-driven examples of Chave's Hermitage. It will offer some early enjoyment given its ripe style, yet the minerality and structure all point to it having ample longevity."
