Domaine de Montille's history stretches back to the 1730s, but its modern era began when a seventeen-year-old Hubert de Montille took over winemaking after his father's death in 1947, eventually building the estate into one of Burgundy's most respected names while also practicing law in Dijon. His children, Étienne and Alix, have since expanded the domaine considerably, and the property has farmed organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2005.

This Bourgogne Rouge draws on a one-hectare plot called Les Longbois in Volnay, home to vines as old as ninety to one hundred years, along with fruit from Puligny-Montrachet and Corpeau. Roughly a third of the harvest was fermented as whole clusters, a technique the domaine varies by cuvée and vintage to shape aromatic lift, with the wine then aged briefly using a modest portion of new oak.

The 2023 shows an inviting mix of raspberry, red cherry, and light floral notes, with a touch of spice and herbal lift on the finish. The palate is fresh, silky, and open-knit, carried by fine-grained tannins and a bright, supple structure that drinks well young. It's an easy match for roast chicken, charcuterie, or a simple mushroom risotto.
