Domaine de Montille traces its roots to 1730s Burgundy, though it was Hubert de Montille who built the estate's modern reputation after taking the helm in the late 1940s, insisting on estate bottling at a time when most growers sold to négociants. Today his children, Étienne and Alix, along with technical director Brian Sieve, continue that legacy, farming biodynamically across the domaine's Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits holdings.

Rugiens-Bas has long been a favorite within the de Montille portfolio, prized for its red clay soil rich in iron oxide, a combination that gives the wine unusual power and distinctiveness even among Pommard's premier crus. The domaine's parcel sits in the most sought-after section of this 5.83-hectare climat and includes vines of considerable age. Grapes are largely fermented as whole clusters, then aged in barrel, with a meaningful portion of new oak, building structure while keeping the fruit lifted.

Expect a wine with aromas of black plum, mulberry, smoke, and forest floor, wrapped around a full-bodied, tannic frame that carries real backbone without heaviness. Fresh acidity keeps everything balanced, pointing to real aging potential. It pairs naturally with braised short rib, duck breast, or a well-aged Comté.

92-94 Points
"The 2023 Pommard Les Rugiens-Bas 1er Cru (66% whole cluster) has a perfumed bouquet with more complexity than the Les Pezerolles, blossoming nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh with fine tannins. Crushed stone infuses the red fruit through a sustained and precise finish. Excellent."
