Peter Sisseck is one of the great visionaries of Spanish wine. The Danish-born winemaker arrived in Ribera del Duero in 1993 and went on to create Pingus — Spain's most coveted bottle and a benchmark for old-vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). PSI is something different: a mission-driven project born in 2007 out of gratitude to the region and its growers. Sisseck struck upon the idea of working directly with farmers and paying by quality rather than by weight  incentivizing them to adopt organic and biodynamic practices, lower yields, and revive neglected vineyards. The name comes from the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet — fittingly, a symbol of something greater than the sum of its parts.

The 2023 PSI brings together fruit from 12 villages, mostly Gumiel de Mercado and Villatuelda in the Soria sector of Ribera del Duero, from a total of 200 hectares across roughly 700 parcels.  The blend is predominantly Tinto Fino with a touch of Garnacha. Vinification takes place in traditional concrete tanks, aged for 18 months in a mix of second- and third-year oak barrels previously used for Pingus, as well as large foudres — new wood is deliberately avoided to give priority to fruit, freshness, and finesse.

Garnet in color, the wine opens with pine and herbal notes followed by red fruit — cherry and a touch of plum. The palate shows fine-grained tannins, a midweight texture, and detailed fruit,  with the characteristic Soria interplay of acidity and structure that rewards a bit of patience. Rated 94 points by both Wine Advocate and Vinous, this is one of Spain's great overachievers — Pingus DNA at a fraction of the price.

Drink: 2025–2032 | Pair with: Roast lamb, Castilian suckling pig, Ibérico pork, aged Manchego

93-94 Points
"Tasted just before bottling, so a sample of the final blend, the 2023 PSI is juicy, ripe and approachable. It is a little showier and headier, despite having similar alcohol to the bottled 2022 (perhaps a tad higher, but not quite reaching 14%), and it fe..."
