2023 Francois Lumpp - Givry Clos du Cras Long (750ml)
François Lumpp began working vines in Givry back in 1977 before striking out on his own in 1991, when he split from his brother to found an independent domaine. Over the following decades he became one of the appellation's leading voices, helping elevate Givry's standing well beyond its usual reputation as an affordable Côte Chalonnaise red. The estate now farms about ten hectares entirely within the appellation, more than ninety percent of it classified premier cru.
Clos du Cras Long sits just east of the village on a small, confidential parcel of only 0.64 hectares, facing the rising sun on limestone from Nantoux mixed with fine Oxfordian marl. The soil drains well while still giving the vines real structure, producing a Pinot Noir with pure fruit and a straight, precise line. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, fermented with native yeasts, and aged twelve months in barrel, with a striking seventy percent new oak used to add volume without burying the site's character.
The nose carries ripe red and black fruit, dried flowers, fine spice, and a touch of licorice. The palate is rich and juicy, framed by firm, structured tannins. Pair it with braised lamb shoulder, roast duck, or a well-aged cheese.
