2023 Francois Lumpp - Givry Crausot (750ml)

Givry has long punched above its modest reputation, said to have been a favorite of King Henry IV, and François Lumpp is largely responsible for restoring that pedigree in the modern era. Since founding his own domaine in 1991, he has built a ten-hectare estate almost entirely classified premier cru, now guided into its next chapter with the involvement of his children and their partners, who continue his exacting, hands-on approach in both vineyard and cellar.

Crausot is one of Givry's newer premier crus, only recognized in the 1990s, sitting at the appellation's southern edge on notably calcareous soil. Lumpp's small parcel splits between a south-facing section on stony limestone and an east-facing stretch on sandier ground, lacking the iron-rich veins found in plots further north. That difference gives Crausot a more mineral, restrained character than some of the domaine's other reds. The fruit, from vines averaging twenty-five years old, is fully destemmed before fermentation.

Bright red cherry and wild strawberry carry a subtle spice note, framed by fine tannins and a focused, stony finish. Structured yet graceful, it rewards a little patience. Pair it with roast goose, venison, or a hearty mushroom tart.
