2023 Georgiev-Milkov - Red Misket Thracian Valley Why Not? (750ml)
The Georgiev/Milkov Wine Project was started by Petar Georgiev and Radostin Milkov, two graduate oenologists and longtime friends who worked in wine regions from Austria to New Zealand before settling in Bulgaria's Thracian Valley near Plovdiv. The pair built their project around confidence in local grapes, beginning with Mavrud and Rubin before expanding into other indigenous varieties, always working with partner growers rather than estate vineyards of their own.
Despite its name, Red Misket is actually a white grape, one of Bulgaria's own indigenous varieties grown in the Western Thracian Lowlands. This bottling, playfully named "Why Not?", is vinified with a light touch to preserve the grape's naturally aromatic character, resulting in a wine defined by its floral lift rather than any heavy handed winemaking intervention.
The wine shows a bright yellow color with green hues, and an intensely floral nose layered with grapefruit and citrus notes, along with hints of quince and stone fruit. On the palate it is elegant and moreish, light to medium bodied, with a pronounced floral character and a lingering finish. It works well as an aperitif or alongside salads, smoked fish, shellfish, or light Asian dishes.
