2023 Hedges Family Estate - Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain (750ml)
Hedges Family Estate traces back to 1987, when Tom Hedges and his French born wife Anne-Marie began exporting a Washington Cabernet-Merlot blend to Sweden's government wine monopoly before they owned a single vine. Two years later, the couple purchased fifty acres on an obscure, sagebrush covered hill called Red Mountain, planting Bordeaux varieties and helping establish what would become one of Washington's most respected appellations. Now led by the second generation, winemaker Sarah Hedges Goedhart and general manager Christophe Hedges, the estate became one of the first wineries in the state to achieve full Demeter biodynamic certification across all five of its vineyards.
This Cabernet Sauvignon is grown entirely on the family's Red Mountain estate, one of Washington's smallest and hottest appellations. The area's intense sun, poor soils, and strong dry winds produce small, thick skinned berries with naturally high tannin and deep color. Grown under biodynamic farming with minimal outside inputs, the fruit is fermented with native yeast to express the vineyard's character as directly as possible, resulting in a wine built for both structure and long term aging potential.
Dark ruby in color, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of blackberry, cassis, and cinnamon, with cedar, dried tobacco, and vanilla in the background. The palate is rich and full bodied, framed by firm tannins and a long, savory finish. It pairs well with braised short ribs, lamb, or aged cheeses.
