Silvio Jermann, whose family has grown grapes in Friuli since his ancestor Anton arrived from the Austro-Slovenian border in 1881, has built a reputation for wines with as much personality in their names as in the glass. None captures that spirit better than this bottling, first made with the 1987 harvest as an homage to U2's "The Joshua Tree" album, specifically the song "Where the Streets Have No Name." For its first nine vintages the wine carried the name "Where the Dreams Have No End," with the capsule color changing each year to cycle through the seven hues of the iris, plus white and black, a detail as whimsical as the story behind it. Today the wine remains one of Jermann's signature bottlings, made at the estate's cellars in Ruttars in the Gorizia hills.

This Chardonnay is grown on marly sandstone soils typical of the region, hand harvested from sunny vineyard sites chosen for full ripeness. The wine ferments and ages for around eleven months in small French oak barrels, a choice that builds structure and a rounded, layered texture without overwhelming the fruit.

The wine shows a sparkling straw-yellow color, with exotic ripe fruit like pineapple, mango, and papaya alongside melted butter, vanilla, and pastry aromas. The palate is round and smooth, with good drive and a long finish. It pairs well with roasted white meats, creamy risottos, or aged cheeses.

92 Points
"Made with 100% Chardonnay, the Jermann 2023 Where Dreams have no end (in screw cap) shows a slightly reductive approach, hinting at the full manner in which the wine will open in the glass. That aromatic tightness comes through as crushed stone, crisp apple, Williams pear and white melon, while the palate reveals polished length with a touch of softness leading to a silky finish, alongside the characteristic creaminess often found in northeast Italian white wines. Fermentation begins in stainless steel until about 6% alcohol is reached before the wine is transferred to 300-liter barrique, where it ages on the lees with bâtonnage for 11 months. Fruit is sourced from multiple vineyard sites averaging 30 years of age on sandstone and marl soils rich in mineral elements."
