2022 Laurent Ponsot - Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee du Aulne (750ml)
Laurent Ponsot spent thirty-six years at his family's storied Domaine Ponsot in Morey-Saint-Denis before departing in February 2017 to chart his own course in Burgundy. He soon launched a new negociant project alongside his son Clément, acquiring vines beginning in early 2019 and gradually building a compact domaine that today covers around seven hectares across the Côte de Nuits. The pair has continued to make careful, targeted purchases to round out their range, applying the meticulous, terroir focused approach Laurent honed over decades at his family's estate.
This village level Gevrey-Chambertin is made entirely from Pinot Noir, harvested late to ensure full ripeness and vinified with a portion of whole bunches included to add structure and lift. Ponsot keeps new oak use minimal, favoring older barrels that let the wine's fruit and mineral character speak clearly rather than imposing heavy wood tones. The result is a wine of real transparency, one that reflects both the cooler, structured nature of Gevrey-Chambertin and Ponsot's own restrained winemaking philosophy.
The glass opens with plum, dark berries, and wild strawberry, joined by a floral note of rose and a touch of the wine's characteristic sauvage edge. On the palate it is medium bodied with refined, fine grained tannins and balanced acidity, finishing long and youthfully firm with real energy. Built for the cellar as much as the table, it pairs beautifully with braised beef, roast duck, or a wedge of aged Comté.
