2023 Mastrojanni - Rosso di Montalcino DOC (750ml)
Mastrojanni sits in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in the southeastern reaches of the Montalcino municipality, an area long considered the historic heart of Brunello production. The estate has been in conversion to biodynamic farming since 2022, and its proximity to Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano rising nearby, shapes a distinct microclimate: cold air draining down from the mountain at night creates wide temperature swings that keep the vines cool and helps shield the estate from hailstorms that affect other parts of Montalcino.
The Sangiovese for this Rosso is hand-harvested and gently pressed, then fermented in concrete vats with a maceration on the skins lasting at least 25 days. Everything in the cellar moves by gravity rather than pumps, a low-intervention approach the estate applies across its wines. Afterward the wine matures in Allier oak barrels of varying sizes before being bottled unfiltered, a process meant to preserve a fresher, more energetic style of Sangiovese distinct from the estate's Brunello bottlings.
Bright ruby in the glass, this wine carries aromas of morello cherry and ripe plum layered with spice and delicate balsamic notes. Medium bodied with woven, velvety tannins and crisp acidity, it finishes with a lifted, juicy energy. Enjoy it with grilled sausage, roast chicken, or a simple plate of pasta with tomato and basil.
