2023 Pegau - Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Maclura (750ml)
Paul and Laurence Féraud, the family behind the celebrated Domaine du Pégau in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, expanded their holdings in 2012 with the purchase of a hundred-acre property in Sorgues, just a few miles from their original estate. Renamed Château Pegau, the site produces wines that carry the same house style and character as its more famous sibling, though at a Côtes du Rhône level rather than Châteauneuf-du-Pape pricing. Cuvée Maclura takes its name from the Osage orange trees, also called hedge apples, that grow within the vineyard.
The wine is a blend built mainly around Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault filling out the remainder, grown on deep clay soils covered in round pebbles. The grapes are harvested by hand and left whole, without destemming, then undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts before aging for about a year in enameled vats, a traditional approach meant to preserve the fruit's natural generosity.
The 2023 shows intense cassis, blackberry, and baking spice on the nose, with soft, ripe tannins and a supple, lingering finish reminiscent of blackcurrant and licorice. Medium-bodied and food-friendly, it has the structure to develop further over five to ten years. It pairs naturally with roasted or grilled red meats, charcuterie, or hearty vegetarian fare.
