2023 Robert Mondavi - Cabernet Sauvignon Private Selection California (750ml)
Robert Mondavi is one of Napa Valley's most influential names, having opened his eponymous winery in 1966 with a mission to establish California as a serious force in world wine. The Private Selection line carries that same accessible, food-friendly spirit into a more widely available tier, sourcing fruit from across California's diverse growing regions rather than a single estate. It remains one of the most recognized entry points into California Cabernet Sauvignon, built around the winery's founding belief that great wine belongs on everyday tables, not just special occasions.
This bottling draws primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the cool-climate vineyards of California's Central Coast, along the Pacific, where slow ripening allows the grapes to build extra depth and complexity. Small amounts of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Malbec, and other red varieties are blended in for added structure and color. The wine is aged for around ten months in a mix of American and French oak barrels, a combination chosen to layer in warm spice and toast without overwhelming the fruit.
The nose shows ripe black cherry, blackberry, and cassis, joined by vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of coffee. The palate is medium-bodied and ripe, with soft, approachable tannins carrying through to a long finish. It pairs well with grilled burgers, baked ziti, or a sharp cheddar board.
