2023 Sine Qua Non - White Central Coast Disenta V (750ml)
Sine Qua Non is the singular creation of Manfred Krankl, an Austrian-born winemaker who arrived in Los Angeles in 1980 with almost nothing and went on to build one of the most sought-after wine estates in the world. He founded the winery following the 1994 harvest of a Bien Nacido Syrah he called "The Queen of Spades," having previously worked alongside Bryan Babcock and John Alban. Krankl gives every vintage a unique name and designs the artwork for each label himself, treating every release as a wholly distinct wine rather than a fixed, repeatable style.
The Distenta series represents Sine Qua Non's ongoing exploration of white Rhône varieties, built around a core of Roussanne and rounded out with other grapes such as Chardonnay, Viognier, and Gelber Muskateller. The 2023 Distenta V continues that tradition, sourced from meticulously farmed vineyard blocks across the estate's Central Coast holdings. The wine typically spends close to two years aging in French oak, much of it new, a process that builds texture and depth while allowing the fruit's natural aromatics room to develop.
This vintage shows Sine Qua Non's signature richness, layering exotic citrus and stone fruit with honeyed floral notes and a luxurious, textural mouthfeel. The finish is long, opulent, and precise, carrying real weight without ever feeling heavy. It pairs beautifully with seared foie gras, Dungeness crab, or a wedge of triple cream cheese.
