Stags' Leap District takes its name from local legend, in which a magnificent stag is said to have leapt across the rocky outcroppings, known as palisades, that rise above the vineyards here. Those same volcanic soils and dramatic terrain still define the appellation today, producing wines often described with the phrase "an iron fist in a velvet glove," combining structure with unusual finesse. Stags' Leap Winery has farmed this ground for generations, building a reputation for elegant reds that reflect the district's distinctive character.

This Merlot draws primarily from vineyards in Oak Knoll, in the cooler, southern stretch of Napa Valley, with additional fruit from Oakville and the estate's own Stags Leap District plantings. Sourcing from these southerly, moderate sites matters, since Merlot can lose its varietal character when grown in excessive heat. The blend rounds out with small additions of Petite Sirah and Malbec for depth and structure. The 2023 growing season stretched unusually long, pushing harvest into early September and giving the grapes extra time to develop concentrated flavor and bright natural acidity.

The wine opens with black cherry, ripe plum, and red berries, lifted by violet and accented with mocha, cedar, and clove. The palate is plush and medium to full bodied, with soft, well knit tannins carrying through a long, velvety finish. Serve it with herb crusted rack of lamb, aged cheddar, or grilled pork tenderloin.

93 Points
"Aromas of plums, ripe red cherries, wet stones and roses. Medium-to full-bodied with soft tannins. Juicy and succulent with a lovely bed of red fruit. So fresh, too. Enchanting. 94% merlot, 5% petite sirah and 1% malbec. Drink now"
