2023 Sylvie Esmonin - Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Sylvie (750ml)
Domaine Sylvie Esmonin traces its roots in Gevrey-Chambertin back to the fifteenth century, though Sylvie herself has run the estate since taking over from her father Michel in 1989 and bottling under her own name since 1996. Trained in oenology in Dijon, she farms just five hectares, anchored by the family's prized Clos Saint-Jacques holding. Her winemaking leans heavily on whole-cluster fermentation, a technique that lends her wines pronounced structure and a clear sense of place even at the entry level.
Cuvée Sylvie draws on younger vines and parcels situated just outside Gevrey-Chambertin's official village boundary, farmed with the same sustainable, low-intervention approach Esmonin applies to her grand cru-adjacent bottlings. The grapes undergo partial whole-cluster fermentation before the wine is aged in older barrels, a choice that favors lift and freshness over heavy oak influence. It is widely regarded as one of the more dependable Bourgogne Rouges available year after year.
The 2023 is supple and fragrant, with bright Pinot fruit, crunchy red cherry, and a whisper of stem spice underneath. The texture is polished and inviting, built for early drinking. Pour it with roast turkey, grilled salmon, or aged Gruyère.
