The Prisoner began in 2000 as winemaker Dave Phinney's rebellious take on the traditional Napa blend, starting with a tiny release built from leftover Zinfandel, Charbono, and Petite Sirah. Its iconic label—drawn from a Francisco de Goya sketch about injustice—became as recognizable as the wine itself. The 2023 vintage continues that spirit while expanding the palette and scale.
Grapes for the 2023 blend come from a trusted network across Napa Valley, including the Solari Family Vineyard in Calistoga and Korte Ranch in St. Helena. This year’s wine unites Zinfandel with Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec to layer richness and structure without leaning on a single variety.
On the nose, expect cranberry and blackberry framed by dried plum, caramelized vanilla, nutmeg, and a hint of toasted coconut. The palate is soft and plush, delivering a full-bodied, opulent experience with a long, smooth, luscious finish.
