2023 The Prisoner Wine Company - Red Blend (750ml)
The Prisoner began in 2000 as winemaker Dave Phinney's rebellious take on the traditional Napa blend, an initial release of just 385 cases built from leftover Zinfandel, Charbono, and Petite Sirah. Its unconventional label, borrowed from a Francisco de Goya sketch depicting the injustice of the Spanish War of Independence, became as recognizable as the wine itself. Phinney sold the brand in 2010, and after a stint under Huneeus Vintners it landed with Constellation Brands in 2016, growing into Napa's leading luxury red blend while keeping its original spirit of breaking with convention.
Grapes for the blend come from a network of growers across Napa Valley who have worked with the brand for years, including the Solari Family Vineyard in Calistoga and Korte Ranch in St. Helena. The 2023 combines Zinfandel with Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec, a mix chosen to layer richness and structure rather than lean on any single variety.
The wine pours full bodied and opulent, with cranberry, blackberry, and dried plum on the nose alongside caramelized vanilla, nutmeg, and toasted coconut. The palate is soft and plush, finishing smooth and luscious. It pairs well with barbecue ribs, grilled sausage, or a slice of dark chocolate torte.
