Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley, a former emergency room physician who sold his stake in Frog's Leap to focus entirely on preserving California's old-vine heritage. Turley has since built a reputation as a steward of the state's most historic vineyards, many with vines dating back to the late 1800s, producing dozens of single-vineyard Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs using organic farming and native yeast fermentation throughout.

The Estate Zinfandel comes from the vineyard surrounding the Turley family home just north of St. Helena, land Larry originally purchased in 1974 and has since expanded into a seventy-five acre certified organic estate. The core planting dates to the mid-1990s and has grown to include head-trained, dry-farmed Zinfandel alongside Carignane, Trousseau, and Cinsault, varieties historically interplanted in classic old-vine Zinfandel vineyards to create a more balanced, authentic field blend rather than a single-varietal wine.

The 2023 vintage is soft, open-knit, and approachable, with aromas of crushed flowers, white pepper, mint, and chalk. On the palate, black cherry and raspberry mingle with orange peel and toasty spice, building toward fine, medium-grained tannins. It pairs well with grilled lamb kebabs, smoked turkey, or a spiced pear tart.

94 Points
"Deeply structured and detailed, with rich blackberry and tart cherry flavors blending with briar patch, white pepper and savory anise notes that build tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2035. 1,984 cases made."
