Alpine Rift takes its name from the geological faultline that runs through Marlborough, nestled between New Zealand's Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean. This dramatic landscape, shaped over millions of years, has thrust up mountains that shelter the vineyards from wild westerly winds, while ancient glacial soils and a cool, sunny climate create ideal conditions for what is widely considered one of the world's great Sauvignon Blanc regions.

Fruit for the 2024 vintage was sourced from a selection of exceptional sites across Marlborough's Southern Valleys, the Central Wairau Plains, and the Awatere Valley. A combination of heavier loess clay and free-draining alluvial soils, naturally low yields, and open canopies allowed the vines to ripen small, intensely flavored, golden bunches of fruit. The grapes were picked during the cooler hours of the day, gently pressed, and cold settled before the juice was racked into a combination of stainless steel tanks and old French oak puncheons, where a mix of cultured and wild indigenous yeasts fermented the wine through to dryness. Each lot rested on its lees separately before blending and bottling.

The result is an elegant interpretation of the classic Marlborough style, with enticing aromas of white-fleshed nectarine, papaya, and honeydew melon, along with a hint of mandarin and jalapeño. The palate is ripe and richly textured, finishing crisp and citrus-driven. The partial wild fermentation in old oak lends the wine extra richness and complexity beyond the region's typically zippy, stainless-steel style.

This is a versatile match for spring vegetables, creamy dishes, grilled or pan-seared salmon, scallops, and alpine-style cheeses.

93 Points
"Seven percent of the 2024 Alpine Rift Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in oak, and the wine is textural and very fine. It represents a refined and restrained expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, yet it doesn’t lose the juicy, satisfying intensity of Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, ditto the chalky texture. It's pure. This is really good. I like the crystalline polish of it."
