Escudo Rojo was founded in 1997 by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild house, the storied Bordeaux family behind Château Mouton Rothschild, as a way to bring French winemaking expertise to Chile's exceptional terroir. The wines are produced at the Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo Chile bodega, a modern winery built south of Santiago that blends state-of-the-art equipment with classic Bordeaux winemaking traditions, all under the direction of a French winemaker.

This Carmenere comes from the Colchagua Valley, a warm, Mediterranean-influenced region south of Santiago known for producing some of Chile's most robust reds. The vineyards are planted across a mix of soils, from deep clay that concentrates the fruit to gravelly, mineral-driven ground that lends elegance to the wine. Grapes are hand-picked, then vinified in the Bordeaux style to favor gentle extraction, before spending time in French oak that adds structure without overwhelming the fruit.

The wine shows a deep ruby color, with aromas of black currant, blackberry, and dark spice. On the palate it is full-bodied and grippy, with polished tannins and a long, layered finish. It pairs well with grilled red meats, stews, or hearty spiced dishes.

97 Points
"A veritable treasure trove of delights: plums, cherries and blackberries pave the way to a chocolate richness, layered with tobacco and cigar box oak. Crunchy on the palate with supple tannins and an amplifying eucalyptus finale."
