Phil Sexton established Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley town of Healesville, and under founding winemaker Steve Flamsteed the estate built its name on single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay drawn from five distinct sites. Melanie Chester stepped in as head of winemaking in 2021 and has since guided the estate to recognition as Halliday's Winery of the Year. Circle of Fifths, her newest addition to the range, takes its name from music theory, echoing the way the winery's five vineyard "voices" combine into a single wine.

This Pinot Noir blends fruit from vineyards concentrated mainly in the Upper Yarra, hand-picked and sorted before following one of two paths in the cellar, either whole-bunch semi-carbonic fermentation or destemming with a cold soak beforehand. Around forty percent of the 2024 blend went through whole-bunch fermentation, and gentle gravity-based cap management allows for soft extraction ahead of pressing. The wine matures in French oak barriques through malolactic fermentation, with about fifteen percent new wood, before bottling without fining or filtration.

The glass shows deep, bright red with a violet edge, opening to wild black cherry and raspberry laced with fennel seed spice and a floral lift from whole-bunch fermentation. The palate is concentrated yet silky, with ripe, well-integrated tannins built for the medium term. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, mushroom dishes, or something spiced and savory.

92 Points
"The 2024 Circle of Fifths Pinot Noir is so named because it features fruit from all five single vineyards—it also references a complex but interesting musical arrangement concept linked to John Coltrane, should one be so inclined to look it up (I did so, after pressing "play" on one of my favored Coltrane albums). The wine leads with rose petal perfume, cherry blossom, red apple, star anise, pomegranate, licorice and dried sage, with leather, tobacco and tapenade to close. In the mouth, there is a lot going on, yet I find the intersection of acidity and tannin through the finish to skew and occlude the flow of both thought and flavor. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
