The 2024 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumeaux comes from Domaine Joseph Pascal, a family estate in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet formerly known as Domaine Jean Pascal & Fils and now run by Yann and Alexandra Pascal alongside their son Joseph. With 15 hectares under vine, it ranks among the larger domaines in the appellation, and the entire harvest is estate bottled.

The fruit for this premier cru comes from vines averaging 38 years old, rooted in clay-limestone soils within Les Chalumeaux. Following gentle pressing, the wine is barrel fermented, with roughly 25 percent new oak, then aged for 11 months on its fine lees with regular battonage. A further four months in stainless steel allows the wine to settle before bottling.

On the nose, this Chardonnay offers good intensity, with citrus fruit joined by a touch of struck match and light reduction that should soften gracefully with time in the bottle. The palate is well balanced, framed by fine acidity and well integrated oak that adds weight through the mid-palate, with a gentle grip and a hint of creaminess carrying into the finish.

This is a Puligny built for the cellar as much as the table, drinking beautifully alongside roasted white fish, shellfish in cream sauces, or aged Comte.
